Second Grade

Information

In Second Grade, students work hard to become fluent with their reading skills. Students rely on context clues in addition to their phonics skills to read more complex text.  Students develop their independent skills and dive deep into chapter books.

Students work to become fluent at math facts.  Fluency in math facts provides a strong foundation for further math development.  Teachers use whole group teaching, small group teaching, and individual conferencing the meet the various needs of students.

Second grade brings the conclusion of the Superkids ELA program.  Students complete their foundational skills needed to make the shift from learning to reading to reading to learn.  Orton Gillingham continues to be utilized in second grade in addition to the the Into Math series by HMH.

Finally, students in second grade have the opportunity to watch chicks hatch and even take a trip to the zoo at the end of the year.  The whole child is continually being developed throughout the entire second grade school year.
