First Grade

Information

First grade is a year for substantial academic development.  Students make significant reading gains in the first grade.  

First grade has an instructional assistant to ensure small groups and one-on-one attention can be given to each developing student.  Through guided reading and guided math groups student's learning pace and style are able to be met effectively.  

First grade builds on the Superkids curriculum started in Kindergarten.  Additionally, first grade uses Orton Gillingham to continue to build strong phonemic awareness.  The Into Math series by HMH also continues in first grade.  

Even in first grade, students are challenged to collaborate with peers and to use time wisely.  These lifelong skills are instilled at SHCS from the very beginning.  Students are encouraged to work to their full potential and share their big ideas.
